I have never collected bribe – JAMB Registrar

The Registrar of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, JAMB, Is-haq Oloyede, has declared that he has never collected bribe from anyone.
Mr. Oloyede, who is also the immediate past Vice Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, made this disclosure while reacting to allegations of fraud levelled against him by the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU.
The union had in a petition sent to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, accused Mr. Oloyede and the incumbent vice chancellor of the university, Abdulganiy Ambali, of fraud totalling more than N2 billion.
Other allegations levelled against the duo include pension fraud, unremitted deductions, extortion from students, contract inflation and kick-backs; as well as unlawful payments to
ex-principal officers of the university.
In his reaction, Mr. Oloyede denied all the allegations. The don said he has never taken bribe,
extorted anyone, inflated contracts nor accepted gifts from any contractor.
The JAMB registrar also maintained that he operated a transparent system within the period he served the university as vice chancellor.
“I am extremely selective in accepting gifts from even personal friends. My needs are limited and my legitimate income is sufficient to spend on my volunteer work,” the JAMB boss said.
“I have never in my life collected bribe, inflated contracts, extorted anyone nor accepted gifts beyond “Thank You greeting cards” from any contractor, dead or alive.”
Before his appointment as JAMB registrar, Mr. Oloyede served as vice chancellor of the University of Ilorin between 2008 and 2012.
Within the period, he served as Chairman of the Association of Vice Chancellors of Nigerian Universities, AVCNU; initiator of the Association of West Africa Universities, AWAU; President of the Association of African Universities, AAU; and Board member of the
Association of Commonwealth Universities, ACU as well as the International Association of Universities, IAU.
In August 2016, President Muhammadu Buhari appointed Mr. Oloyede the registrar of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, JAMB. He was appointed alongside sixteen other heads of parastatals and agencies under the Federal Ministry of Education.
In its reaction, the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, kicked against Mr. Oloyede’s appointment, stressing that the former vice chancellor should be probed. The union also alleged that Mr. Oloyede’s era as vice chancellor at the University of Ilorin was
characterized by anti-democratic and anti-union activities.
But in his response to the union’s petition sent to the EFCC on Thursday, Mr. Oloyede said that his response to the allegations was necessary because there is need to “thwart the Satanic objective of distracting me from the national assignment which they protested against but failed.”
The JAMB boss however called on the anti-graft agency, EFCC, to investigate the allegations and take necessary action after establishing the truthfulness of the case brought before it by the union.

Buhari fires JAMB Registrar, 16 others, names Prof. Ishaq Oloyede as new Registrar/Chief Executive of JAMB

The Federal Government has announced the sacking of chief executives of 17 parastatals and agencies under the Ministry of Education.
The government’s announcement was contained in a statement issued on Monday night by the Deputy Director of Press and Public Relations in the Education Ministry, Ben Bem Goong.
Four Chief Executives whose tenures were yet to elapse were however retained, while others including the Registrar and Chief Executive of the Joint Admissions and Matriculations Board, Prof Dibu Ojerinde were relieved of their appointments.
The statement said the appointments were with immediate effect, precisely from Monday, August 01, 2016.
The 17 agencies affected in the mass sack and the new Chief Executives appointed included the National Universities Commission, Prof Abubakar Adamu Rasheed; Nigerian Institute for Education Planning and Administration, Prof, Mrs. Lilian Salami; Universal Basic Education, Dr. Hameed Bobboyi and National Library of Nigeria, Prof. Lanre Aina.
Others are National Examinations Council, Prof Charles Uwakwe; National Commission for Mass Literacy, Adult and Non-Formal Education, Prof Abba Aladu and Nomadic Education Commission, Prof Bashir Usman.
Also appointed are National Business and Technical Examinations Board, Prof Isioma Isiugo-Abanihe; Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria, Prof Sunday Josiah Ajiboye; Computer Registration Council of Nigeria, Afolabi Aderinto and National Commission for Colleges of Education, Prof Bappah Aliyu.
The new appointees also included Tertiary Education Trust Fund, Dr. Abdullahi Bichi Baffa; National Teachers Institute, Prof Garba Dahuwa Azare; Librarian Registration Council of Nigeria, Prof Michael Afolabi; and National Mathematical Centre, Prof Steven Ejugwu Onah.
The Secretary-General, Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs in Nigeria,  Prof Ishaq Oloyede has been named Registrar/Chief Executive of JAMB, while the National Institute of Nigerian Languages has Prof Chinyere Ohiri-Aniche as its CEO.
Those retained included the Nigeria Educational Research and Development Council, Prof. Samaila Junaidu; Nigerian French Language C\Village, Prof Rauf Adebisi; National Board for Technical Education, Dr. Mas’ud Kazaure and National Arabic Language Village, Prof. Muhammad Mu’az.
The new appointees are expected to report at the office of the Education Minister on Tuesday, August 02, 2016 by 12:00 noon for inauguration.
Ojerinde ran into trouble with the Minister following the way he handled the ongoing 2016 admission into universities and other tertiary institutions.
On Sunday, he withdrew the list of recommended candidates for admission earlier sent to universities and other tertiary institutions.
The announcement was contained in a statement by the spokesperson for JAMB, Dr. Fabian Benjamin.
According to him, the decision was to ensure that universities perform their statutory responsibility of selecting candidates and referring them to JAMB for confirmation.
This, JAMB stated, should be done in consonance with the admission criteria of merit, catchment area and educationally disadvantaged states as directed by the Minister of Education, Mallam Adamu Adamu, during the policy committee meeting.
Benjamin said the earlier list was sent to help fast-track the process of admission so as to allow other tiers of tertiary institutions conduct their admission for the 2016/2017 academic session.
“Candidates should not panic because this is part of the process of the 2016 admission exercise. JAMB regrets any inconvenience this decision would have caused the tertiary institutions,” he stated.

Shocking! - JAMB withdraws candidates’ list sent to varsities

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board has withdrawn the list of recommended candidates for admission earlier sent to Universities and other tertiary institutions.
The announcement was contained in a statement by the spokesperson of JAMB, Dr. Fabian Benjmin.
JAMB explained that the decision was to ensure that the Senate of Universities perform their statutory responsibility of conducting the selection of candidates and referring them to it for confirmation in line with the admission criteria of merit, catchment and educationally disadvantaged states as directed by the Minister of Education, Mallam Adamu Adamu, during the policy committee meeting.
It said the earlier list was sent to help speed up the process of admission so as to allow other tiers of institutions also conduct their admission.
“Candidates should not panic because this is part of the process of the 2016 admission exercise. JAMB regrets any inconvenience this decision would have caused the tertiary institutions,” he stated.
The Registrar/Chief Executive of JAMB, Prof. Dibu Ojerinde, had given conditions for the 2016 admission saying it would only give approval “after appropriate screening of the candidates by the institutions.”
He had said, “JAMB wishes to state that the latest list of candidates sent to all the tertiary institutions contains candidates who qualified for screening based on the individual institutions capacity. It’s not in any way an admission list.
“However, if this list is not sufficient for the need of any institution, such institution can source from the omnibus printout earlier sent to them by the Board. The public and all tertiary institutions should note that admission will only be approved by the board after appropriate screening of the candidates by the institutions.
“The list which is made up of candidates who met the national cut-off point within the set criteria are sent to the institutions. Again, for purposes of clarity, all institutions that have need for more can source from their omnibus printout as stated above. The candid intention of the Board is to ensure that available spaces are adequately utilised.”
The Federal Government had clarified its ban on Post-Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination and the general admission procedures, saying it “does not in any way affect the statutory role of the Senate of any University or the academic boards of any tertiary institution conducting its admissions.” Punch News July 31st, 2016

FG clarifies ban on Post-UTME, admission procedure

The Federal Government on Saturday clarified its ban on Post-Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination and the general admission procedures, saying it “does not in any way affect the statutory role of the Senate of any University or the academic boards of any tertiary institution conducting its admissions.”
The Minister of Education, Mallam Adamu Adamu, stated this in a statement by the Deputy Director (Press and Public Relations) in the Ministry of Education, Mr. Ben. Bem-Goong.
He said the clarification became necessary “following conflicting reports in the media over the roles of universities and the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board in admission under the new dispensation.”
According to him, the role of JAMB is to conduct the UTME, compile the list of candidates whose scores meet the cut-off marks (180 and above) and send same to the Universities.
The Universities, he emphasised, will shortlist the candidates using the agreed guidelines and thereafter return the shortlisted candidates to JAMB for verification of compliance to guidelines and subsequent issuance of JAMB admission letters.
“For the avoidance of doubt, any screening charges shall apply only to successful candidates who have been issued admission by the universities of their choice. All Universities and JAMB should adhere to this directive”, Adamu stated. Punch July 16, 2016
